Use our tips below to water your indoor or outdoor cactus properly!
How To Water Your Cactus
Use these five tips when watering your cactus, either indoors or outdoors.
Water In Pots
It’s suggested to water any cacti growing in pots twice. Several pots can be watered at once in four-foot sections. Water enough to fill the pots, then go back again to water a second time. Make sure to water the soil deeply and evenly.
Slow And Deep Watering
When cacti are in the ground, watering them deep and slow tends to allow for more even growth, overall. This technique is often referred to as a ‘deep soaking’. A deep soak will be steady and slow, with a dripping garden hose working best. This process can take between 2-6 hours, depending on the size of the plant.
Factor In Size Of Cactus
When it comes to size of the cacti, a bigger and more established plant will not require watering as often. This is due to the fact that the larger cacti have bigger storage tanks where water is held until needed. The bigger this tank is, the longer the plant can go without watering. Large Saguaros, for instance, can go longer without watering than a small, 1-gallon Gold Barrel.
The Right Temperature
A cacti in a warmer climate will require water more often than one located in a cooler area. Always keep this in mind when scheduling your waterings.
Refrain From Watering Newly Planted Cactus
Make sure to plant any new cacti dry and wait on watering. Typically, waiting at least a week is the recommendation before you begin watering the plants. Future watering should only be done when the soil has become completely dry at the roots.
